Dear Bernie

I am the Course Co-Ordinator of the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) course at Victoria University, Melbourne Australia.

We are presently developing post Graduate courses for paramedics to Masters level.

I am very interested in the concept of the WEMSI program.  As part of our developing Graduate Certificates and Diplomas we are planning modules which we have termed 'remote area paramedic care'.

We are always looking at a co-operative approach to education, and would be interested looking at the way it is done in Canada.  We can always learn from other people!

Just to give you some understanding about paramedic training in Victoria (the state I work), briefly;

Students undergo a three Diploma of Health Science (Ambulance Officer) course.  On completion of the course students can then practice as ambulance officers (paramedic level 1) this is a ALS level manual defib, small array of drugs etc.  After twelve months experience students can return and upgrade their qualification to a Bachelor degree.  The degree is practice based and student directed.

Presently intensive care paramedic level is conducted in-house by the amb ulance service.  It is a one year program.  The student must have at least two years experience as an ambulance officer.  This produces a MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance) or intensive care paramedic.  A MICA paramedic works independently under clinical guidelines, has 23 drugs, can ETT with sediation (rapid sequence), chest drain, nasogastric, IO etc.

Education here is undergoing change, we are hoping to stream line the present system and introduce a three year degree program, with a graduate experience year, and Intensive care paramedic level at Graduate Certificate level.

So we are very interested in sharing and becoming involved in courses like you are offering.

Hope to hear from you soon.
