This list used to fit on a single sheet of paper. However, a recent influx of updates and new caves (July/August 1997) has enlarged the list so it now requires a second sheet to hold in the cave codes and update information.

showing it's access status. Keys to the code are given below.

Code Key
The first code letter indicates the cave's access status:
C - Cave is closed during all or part of the year
L - Limited access cave (open conditionally)
O - Open cave but special circumstances may apply
The second letter gives conditions of access:
A - Entrance to cave can be gained only by payment of a fee (commercial
unless otherwise noted)
B - Cave is closed but closing not generally enforced
D - Access controlled and limited by a conservation group (such as the
VAR or BCCS)
E - Cave closure is enforced by the cave owner
L - Some access restrictions apply to part of the cave
N - Cave is closed by the NSS or VAR for conservation reasons and closing
is enforced by social pressure
O - Cave is generally open but entry permission must be obtained from the
owner prior to entry (each trip normally)
S - Sensitive cave owner relations
T - Cave closed temporarily or seasonally (i.e., during hunting season)
U - A government agency has a policy of limiting access for safety or
scientific reasons
W - Access limited to scientific & serious cave work
X - Cave is closed but exceptions may be made for some people or groups
(such as an NSS chapter or the owner's friends)
The third letter gives the state of access to the cave:
F - Fenced entrance
G - Gated entrance
P - Permanent closure (concrete, earth, etc.)
The fourth letter gives other aspects of cave admission:
G - Entry permission must be obtained from someone other than the owner
(such as a conservation group)
R - Entry permission must be requested from the owner
V - A waiver must be signed before entering (see owner)
Note: "Z" means that no data are available. "-" means no restrictions in
a category (e.g., "-" in the 3rd letter means that the entrance is in its
natural state). The date in parentheses indicates the date that the infor-
mation about the cave was received.
